MFAT Tsunami Update 15

MFAT Tsunami Update 15 At 1100 On Sunday 2 December

1 Thailand: New Zealand officials in Bangkok advised early this morning NZ time today that their database now has 903 names. Of these, 619 are now confirmed OK, two are confirmed deceased, and 7 are in hospitals in Bangkok and in the affected areas. Officials are focusing in particular on 23 New Zealanders unaccounted for and believed to have been in the affected areas. A further 252 are unaccounted for and thought to have been somewhere in Thailand.

2 A further update of Thailand figures is not/not likely to be available again until tomorrow morning.

2 Confirmation of the name of the second deceased New Zealander will be made as soon as possible. We have no confirmation of a third New Zealander being positively identified, despite some suggestions to this effect.

3 All affected areas: As of this morning, MFAT had a total of 3149 persons on its database, of whom 2024 were confirmed aliive and well.

4 MFAT asks again that those who have since heard from New Zealanders in the affected areas, and have not already done so, to call the Red Cross on 0800 733 276 to enable details of their being alive and well to be registered.

5 The New Zealand medical team being sent to Indonesia (see statement of 1 January by Ministers Goff and Burton) departed this morning at 1010.
