Want To Know What's Going On In Maoridom?

Want To Know What's Going On In Maoridom?

If you want to know what's going on in Maoridom, check out www.tpk.govt.nz/news/events.

Te Puni Kokiri is beefing up its online Maori events calendar www.tpk.govt.nz/news/events providing internet surfers with current and relevant information on upcoming Maori activities.

Chief Executive Leith Comer said the changes are about reflecting the positive activities that go on every day in Maoridom.

"Maori development is occurring at an exciting pace, at a regional, national and international level. Unfortunately these activities often do not draw a lot of attention because they are positive, successful or simply about getting on with the business of life.

Mr Comer said it is critical for the continued growth and wellbeing of New Zealand that the Maori potential is appreciated and developed.

"Te Puni Kokiri is keen to reflect the positive happenings in Maoridom so that more New Zealanders can appreciate and hopefully participate in the dynamic movement that is occurring - in all spheres of achievement - cultural, spiritual, academic, scientific and sporting.

"Maori are participating in te ao Mäori. They are also participating and succeeding as Mäori both in New Zealand and internationally. A comprehensive and current on-line events calendar will be a valuable communications tool to support those efforts."

The chief executive says the calendar will have a spin-off for the organisation as well.

"By being aware of regional activity and events, Te Puni Kokiri will be better placed to work alongside Maori which will subsequently support our capability to lead and influence policy.

"Our aim is to make the database a focal point for what's happening of interest in the Maori world, providing a one-stop-shop for information on upcoming events."

The events calendar includes dates and contact details for major events such as the Tamariki Sports and Cultural Day (December 2, 2004), Maori Sports Awards (December 4, 2004), Te Matatini National Festival (February 24-27, 2005) and the Hui Taumata 2005 (March 1-3, 2005).

Anyone involved in Maori events - or events where there was likely to be wide Maori interest - will be encouraged to submit their listings to Te Puni Kokiri for inclusion on the website.
