Many Christians Support Civil Unions Legislation
Statement made by Reverend Glynn Cardy, Anglican Vicar, St Mathew-in-the City, Auckland
There is a large body of Christians that support the passage of the civil unions legislation before Parliament.
We do not see the very important institution of marriage being under threat from this legislation. The issue is one of human rights, and Parliament has a responsibility to ensure all have equal rights.
The Jesus we celebrate is one of loving inclusiveness, and it should not be assumed that the views expressed by some Christian leaders are the viewpoint of all Christians.
We congratulate those Members of Parliament who intend to support the legislation. They can do so knowing that there are many, perhaps even a majority of Christians, who strongly support their position.
