Support Civil Unions With An Extra Helping
Gay Eaters for Jesus, a national group providing tautoko to the Government’s proposed Civil Union Bill and Relationships (Statutory References) Bill, began it’s campaign of support for the legislation by calling on supporters nationwide to treat themselves to an extra portion of kai when they sit down for the next meal.
The call comes in response to the ‘limited fast’ undertaken by United Future MP Paul Adams and Baptist pastor Steve Trim as protest to Civil Unions.
“We want to promote a positive message with our action”, said Xavier Goldie, facilitator of GEFJ. “Too often activists like Mr Adams and Mr Trim like to punish themselves when engaging with the political system. We feel that it is our duty to make sure that the extra food left over by these deluded individuals isn’t going to waste”.
Mr Goldie added that the actions of those opposed to the proposed Bills were marred by a lot of grumpiness and high drama, sure signs of an empty tummy. “Some people seem to be a bit upset about what’s going on, but I think what they really need is a bit of chocolate and nice warm Milo – it soothes most people who are just a bit upset” he said.
“We’re living in a great country, with a booming economy and low unemployment. The Civil Union Bill and the Relationships Bill are about further opening up our society to the diversity that exists here. What better way to celebrate that than by pampering ourselves with an extra portion of food or drink?”
Mr Goldie said that the GEFJ were not promoting a lifestyle of excess. “After all, many gay, lesbian and progressive people realise the beauty of restrained minimalism – whether in interior decorating or one’s political outlook, and we certainly wouldn’t want to contribute to an expanding waistband. We’re just trying to encourage people to live it up a little in a country that holds a great future for all New Zealanders, irrespective of their sexual or gender identity.”
