Minister to visit Auckland school for Foodsafe Week
Minister for Food Safety, Annette King, will mark Foodsafe Week with a visit to Manurewa High School in Auckland on the morning of Thursday December 2nd.
The Minister will be greeted by the principal and staff of the school before being given a guided tour of the school's industrial kitchen, where Year 13 students currently taking the Catering and Hospitality course will be preparing food and setting up their restaurant for a buffet lunch as the Minister tours the exceptional facilities available at the school.
Foodsafe Week runs from November 29th to December 5th this year and the Minister is keen to talk to students who intend to follow a career in catering and hospitality about the importance of food safety, safe food handling and food safe practices.
The Minister will also visit the technology block of the school to speak to two Year 10 food technology classes and their teachers and will meet with the head of food technology and catering at the school.
Foodsafe Week kicks off the start of the New Zealand Foodsafe Partnership's summer campaign which is designed to help consumers keep themselves and their families safe from foodborne illness over the high risk warm summer days.
Other events during Foodsafe Week include a barbeque in Manukau City, hosted by the New Zealand Foodsafe Partnership on Thursday December 2nd, with support from Healthy City Manukau. The free barbeque will run from 12:30 till 2:30pm at The Warehouse Car park, Cavendish Drive, Manukau.
The New Zealand Foodsafe Partnership was set up in 1998 with a small group of representatives from the food industry, consumer groups, public health groups, MAF Food (now the New Zealand Food Safety Authority) and the Ministry of Health, to promote consistent and appropriate food safety messages to New Zealand consumers. Further information on the Foodsafe partnership and current activities, resources and events can be found at www.foodsafe.org.nz
Press are invited to attend the Minister's visit, which will run from 9:00am through to 10:00am.
