“Immorality Anywhere Is A Threat To Morality Everywhere” – Bernice A King, 23/10/04, Destiny NZ Political Rally

Political party Destiny New Zealand celebrated its Labour weekend rally with well over three thousand passionate supporters.

The evening’s proceedings, which included the presentation of key policies and the Destiny New Zealand delegates, were sealed with a powerful endorsement from Bernice A King, daughter of Dr Martin Luther King Jr.

“The question might be raised, why would this young lady come all the way from Atlanta Georgia in America way over to New Zealand in the down under, to be a part of another nations political business. You know that same question was posed over 40 some years ago 45 years ago when my father found himself in a city that was not his residence and they wanted to know why this young preacher was coming to give his support and endorsement to some other leaders in that city and I recall that my father made a statement that is forever etched in my mind, when he said ‘injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere’. And I’m here because immorality anywhere is a threat to morality everywhere. I Understand that if things are going to shift and change then it must occur here first in New Zealand ,” King declared.

On the topic of same sex unions:

“I am proud to be the daughter of Martin Luther King Junior, a man - and Corretta Scott King, a woman. I wonder how they’ll print that in the papers. When my father pronounced some forty one years ago, the part that is especially dear to my heart is ‘I have a dream that one day my four little children will live in a nation were they will not be judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character’ - that part is near and dear to me because it says that Martin Luther King Junior was a man who fought for the next generation. Who stood for the next generation…Who understood that God was a generational God and I always say or I have said before that as I look at and study the movement that he led, I know deep down in my sanctified soul …that he did not take a bullet for same sex unions.”

Party Leader Richard Lewis made a passionate plea for New Zealanders to seriously consider the generational consequences of the Civil Union and Relationship Bills.

“The Civil Union and Relationships Bills by their very nature create broken families – denying generations of children a God-given right to their biological father and mother. Should these Bills become a reality in our nation, our education and social institutions will be obliged to teach our children that homosexuality is normal and even desirable according to acceptable social standards reinforced by law”, said Lewis. “As far as Destiny New Zealand is concerned, the sexual preference of an extreme minority does not equate to a civil right deserving of law,” he added.

Lewis later described the event has a significant milestone in the party’s progress heading toward the next election. “Tonight was absolutely awesome in every possible way. And while it caps an incredible 12 months our sights are firmly set on the months ahead.”
