Employers must stump-up for super, says union
The country’s largest union says that the workplace superannuation proposal unveiled today is a good start – but employers shouldn’t get out of contributing to workers’ retirement income.
Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union national secretary Andrew Little said that without a matching subsidy from the employer, workplace superannuation schemes held little attraction.
“We have to accept that in the year in which that’s introduced there may be a trade-off between superannuation and a pay rise, but only in that single year,” he said.
Superannuation was one of the major issues debated at the union’s national conference earlier this year, with members deciding to run a major campaign on the issue.
