Alliance Election Strategy for 2005
Matt McCarten: Alliance Leader
The Alliance Council met over the weekend and developed a proposed 2005 electoral strategy for discussion with members. Further details of that proposal are set out here as a result of inaccurate media speculation regarding the Council's decision.
The proposal commits the Alliance to a national election campaign in the electorates in 2005. At the same time the proposal allows the Alliance to promote a party vote for another party. This will ensure that Labour is able to lead a true centre-left government after the election rather than a coalition with right wing parties.
The Alliance Conference in November will make the final decision. Alternative electoral strategies have been invited and will also be discussed by the Conference.
The Alliance will be seeking to exchange information with the Greens and the Maori Party to inform the Conference decision on this matter.
The Council elected Laila Harré to the vacant position of President.
The Alliance Council agreed that any officer involvement in another party's work would require Council approval. No such approval has been sought at this stage.
