Health Cuts Hurt Launches Campaign For Board Elections

“Health Cuts Hurt today launches its campaign to raise the level of debate around Canterbury health issues and to win four seats on the Board in the coming Board elections,” Heather Carter, Chairperson of Health Cuts Hurt Inc said today. She was speaking at the launch of the campaign at the Christchurch Public Hospital at 3pm today where Health Cuts Hurt unveiled its four candidates and its pamphlet.

“Health Cuts Hurt was formed in 2003 to confront the way the Canterbury District Health Board was suppressing public debate particularly round the cutting of 10,000 Cantabrians off waiting lists for operations due to the introduction of a new funding model termed Population Based Funding,” said Heather Carter.

“Over the last two years our group has criticised the Board and its managers for selling off the family silver to cover today’s deficit,” said Heather Carter. “The selling of Queen Mary Hospital land was the most public example of this.”

“Just this week the Board has proposed sacking half the staff in the clinical records department just to save money,” said Heather Carter. “Our group has decided enough is enough. It is time to put a choice in front of Cantabrians. Our four candidates promise to publicly debate health issues and to argue with Wellington for more funds rather than meekly going along with cuts to services.”
