Calling all nominees for the 2004 local elections
Nominations for candidates for the 2004 local elections open tomorrow, 23 July 2004.
Local Government New Zealand is encouraging people with an interest in local government to consider standing for election.
“If you are passionate about your community and want to make a difference now is the time to consider becoming a candidate in this year’s local elections. This is an opportunity to have an input into the decisions that affect you, your family and your community,” says Basil Morrison President of Local Government New Zealand.
“We need a range of elected members of different ages, ethnicities and backgrounds to represent the diversity of our communities.
“The role of councils has changed dramatically over the years. Local government’s role is to create a vision and direction for their community. Councils and elected members develop local solutions for local issues taking into account factors such as geography, diversity of communities, the environment, economic opportunities and the health and social well-being of the community. Councils represent the views of their community, and at the same time, balance many different needs.
“All you need to become an elected member is a willingness to participate and a commitment to serve your local community. The roles of mayors, chairs, councillors and community board members can be very demanding but they are also rewarding. The decisions made by elected members can shape the future of a city, district or region,” says Mr Morrison.
Nominations for candidates for approximately 1000 positions across New Zealand’s 86 councils will open tomorrow and close on the 20th of August 2004. Voting papers will be sent out from 17 September 2004 and must be mailed back to the council by election day, 9 October 2004.
Candidates must be over the age of 18, a New Zealand citizen and enrolled on the electoral roll. For further information on standing as a candidate in this year’s elections please call 0508 910 2004, visit www.lgnz.co.nz or contact the electoral officer at your local council.
