Charismatic Cuba is the place to go! It enchanted me with its proud blend of peoples, whose solidarity extends though their music and arts, their education and health systems and their unique history of freedom and self-determination. I was one of three New Zealanders and seventeen Australians, (aged 17 - 79), who made up the twenty-first Southern Cross Brigade. We had the opportunity to live work and travel along side Cuban’s for an intense month, from 28 December to 23 January. I anticipate accompanying many more New Zealanders eager to experience the passion of Cuba on the next Southern Cross Brigade. Thursday, July 15, 7.30pm, Room 3.407, School of Engineering, 20 Symonds Street NUCLEAR FREE NEW ZEALAND - TWENTY YEARS ON. Dr. Robert White of Centre for Peace Studies, University of Auckland. This talk will look briefly at the development of the nuclear free policy set in place in July 1984 by the newly elected Labour Government. Events leading up to the enshrining of this policy in law in June 1987 will be considered in more detail, and key developments from then to the present reviewed. Recent proposals by National for modifying the legislation will be discussed, and reasons given for the need to retain our unique Nuclear Free Zone Act unchanged. The talk will conclude with a brief discussion of the future significance and role of our nuclear free status in the light of the current international situation. Dr. White is a retired nuclear physicist, formerly on the academic staff of the University of Auckland. He has been Director of the University Centre for Peace Studies for most of the time since the Centre opened in 1988. Refreshments afterwards in the 12th floor common room.
