Mixed feelings over mill decision - union
The Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union says it is pleased that the future of Kawerau pulp and paper mill is secure, but disappointed that there will be some job losses. Mill owner Norske Skog today announced that it was making a major investment in the mill’s numbers two and three paper machines, but that the number one machine would close in two years’ time.
EPMU national secretary Andrew Little said that the announcement of investment in the plant was good news for the community and the industry – a major employer in the area.
“This announcement secures many jobs for the future,” he said.
“We are disappointed by the decision to close the number one paper machine, but it is 50 years old.”
Mr Little said that he expected the company to
honour its usual consultation obligations over the closure
and job
losses.
