Haylon Smith: Age Blocks Candidacy
A 17-year-old from North Shore City has been cut four days short of the Candidacy enrollments for council electoral
nominations.
Nominations close on the 20th of August, where candidates have to be on the electoral roll for them to be accepted. He
Turns 18, August 24th.
The 17-year-old hoped to be the youngest politician in the country, if not the world.
He hoped to be elected to the council, after working with them for two years as Youth Council chairman, he saw a need
for change in many aspects of council ,consultation processes, red tape and often councilors themselves. He felt he was
more than capable of doing a better job than alot of the current councilors, and listning to the community would be a
high priority.
Peter McArther, from NSCC said there was absolutely nothing that could be done to void the date.
This is even though Haylon would be 18 well before the elections in October, and even be able to vote, and not allowing
his nomination to be accepted seems ridiculous to Haylon, as he feels he would have enough support to make it into
council, he feels anyone that has dealt with the council and its processes would agree.
Haylon is livid at the fact he cant run, and is preparing a campaign to grant an exemption, and intends to contact local
MP's as soon as possible.
