Salvation Army Aims for One Million Dollars

The Salvation Army aims to raise one million dollars during its annual appeal that kicks off next week.

The appeal, known as Salvation Army Week, will mobilize thousands of volunteers throughout the country between Monday, April 26 and Sunday, May 2. Collectors will be visible in supermarkets and shopping malls, and on street corners. Some collectors will be in Salvation Army uniform, while others will don bright jackets and tote large collecting buckets displaying the Red Shield. All collectors will display ID cards.

Salvation Army spokesman Major David Bennett said that the one million dollar target, if achieved, would represent a significant contribution to The Salvation Army’s social and family programmes that help more than 200,000 people in New Zealand each year.

‘With the severe floods in the lower North Island, The Salvation Army was active in supporting flood victims through the provision of food parcels, clothing, furniture, emergency housing, counseling and ongoing support.

‘But it’s important to remember that our services are not limited to emergency situations. We are on the ground everyday of the year providing a whole range of services to people in need throughout the country. Whether its budgeting advice, family mentoring, addiction services or family tracing, The Salvation Army is there for people.

‘The million dollar appeal target will allow us to continue to assist people at their point of need.’
