One Year On and Still No Peace - Call to March From Peace Action Network
This Saturday March 20 a march and rally will take place in Christchurch as part of a global day of action marking a year since coalition forces entered Iraq. Organised by Peace Action Network the march will begin at 2pm from the museum, and will be followed by speeches and entertainment in the Cathedral Sqaure. Speakers include representatives from the Iraqi community, Dean Peter Beck, Ghazala Anwar, lecturer in Islamic Studies, and Bob Leonard from the Anti Bases Campaign.
“The reason behind Saturday’s rally is firstly to observe the anniversary since millions of people across the world marched in protest against the invasion of Iraq last year, and secondly to demand New Zealand immediately cease any involvement in, and support for these wars of aggression in Afghanistan and Iraq” said Peace Action Network spokesperson Claire Dann.
“New Zealand continues to send personnel and equipment to these countries where innocent people are killed daily. It is hoped that this march will send a clear message to the government that New Zealanders do not want to be a part of these unjust occupations. Instead we call for self determination for the peoples of Afghanistan and Iraq”.
The rally is one of many events happening around the country, including marches being held in Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin.
