Milford Spill - Overkill
Conservation Minister Chris Carter’s “shoot from the hip” reaction to the potentially disastrous Diesel spill in the Milford Sounds may be a “Freudian slip” which goes some way towards revealing the high handed “lock it up” approach the Minister has to conservation issues
Outdoor Recreation NZ chairman Paul Check today backed United Future environment spokesman Larry Baldock’s assessment that the solution to this particular issue was as simple as locking the fuel caps on boats travelling in environmentally sensitive waters.
“While incidents of this nature have the power to evoke strong emotions we need to look past the emotion to a measured analysis of the issues and to the development and implementation of appropriate corrective actions.
“All tempered, please, with a hefty dollop of common sense – an all too rare commodity within a runaway Department of Conservation,” Mr Check said.
