Resolve to be better parents, says Parents Centre
Resolve to be better parents, says Parents Centre NZ.
"Now that Christmas is over and the holiday season is with us, it is an excellent opportunity to relax and enjoy time with the children," said Parents Centre New Zealand Chief Executive, Viv Gurrey.
"Preparations leading up to Christmas often add to the stress of the season and put an unnecessary strain on family relationships. Now that Christmas is over, we can relax, unwind and make a few constructive resolutions," said Mrs Gurrey.
"Parents Centre is encouraging all parents to make New Year's resolutions which reflect their determination to be better parents. We have come up with a few ideas to get the ball rolling, but suggest that families take the time to come up with their own resolutions to be better parents in 2004," Mrs Gurrey said.
Parents Centre NZ Inc suggested list of resolutions: -
• Spend quality time with your children
• Tell your children you love them - often
• Don't smack them
• Take the time to communicate before disagreements get out of hand
• Set down clear and consistent rules
• Give lots of positive feedback
• Don't let the little things get to you
• Help your children learn from their mistakes
• Develop a new hobby or pursuit together.
"The list could go on forever. The important thing is that parents take the time to communicate with their children. Making time to enjoy each other is a good start to building better relationships," said Mrs Gurrey
"Holidays are a great time to affirm the good things about family life, and have some good old-fashioned fun together," said Mrs Gurrey.
Parents Centre NZ Inc. also urges the
Government to resolve to develop economic and social
policies, which support families throughout New Zealand
society.
