Extension to the aquaculture moratorium

Media Release 2-12-2003

The Marlborough Environment Centre Inc
25 Rose Street
Blenheim

The Marlborough Environment Centre is totally supportive of the announcement of an extension to the aquaculture application moratorium.

Steffan Browning of the centre who is working closely with The Friends of Nelson Haven and Tasman Bay said both organisations are still heavily involved with a number of appeals to the Environment Court from the last surge of applications.

This extra time will give councils valuable extra time to gather better information on the social and environmental effects of potential new farms, he said, adding that some excellent ecological studies are being undertaken around the country

The Marlborough Sounds appeared to have reached or passed ecological thresholds and when the Marlborough District Council listens it may well find that social thresholds of new marine farm acceptability have also been reached Mr Browning said.
