The Ministry of Fisheries (MFish) today opened its new Marlborough/Kaikoura office, which is based in Blenheim.
MFish decided to open the office as a response to Marlborough and Kaikoura community concerns about the high levels of recreational fishing, an apparent increasing level of poaching in the region, and a desire to have Fishery Officers based in the area.
National Compliance Manager Dave Wood said establishing an MFish office will give local people a much greater level of certainty about maintaining sustainable fisheries resources in their area.
Mr Wood said over the next 18 months staff numbers at the new office would grow to four Fisheries Officers. An official office opening will be in the New Year.
