Arresting the Peace while the terrorist run free
'The arrest of Auckland Peace activist Bruce Hubbard for sending an email to the United States Embassy is a chilling
reminder that freedom of speech is being attacked by the new Counter-terrorism legislation. The email was in protest of
the illegal invasion of Iraq' said Peace Action Wellington member Valerie Morse.
'The new counter-terrorism legislation is a specific directive from Washington DC. Our government is willing to do
almost anything to appease the Yanks including arresting its own citizens for nothing more than expressing their
opinions. It is likely that Bruce was targeted for arrest and will be used as an 'example' to anyone trying to challenge
America's illegal occupation of Iraq.'
'There is significant evidence that the US and its coalition partners have violated human rights and have committed war
crimes in Iraq. Helen Clark has now committed us to participate in these atrocities.'
Peace Action Wellington extends its support to Bruce Hubbard and calls on the Government to withdrawal all support for
the occupation of Iraq immediately.
