CYF rescue package welcomed but let’s get it right

The rescue package for the Child Youth and Family Service announced today by the Government was good news but it was critical that the money was spent correctly, PSA national secretary Richard Wagstaff said today.

Richard Wagstaff said the package, which follows the results of a baseline review of the service by Treasury, the State Services Commission, the Ministry of Social Development, and Child Youth and Family itself, was desperately needed to help rebuild confidence and respect in the service.

“PSA is pleased to see that money will be directed at areas which have been causing our members concern for some time such as the need for more social workers, workload management, waiting times, and family group conference outcomes. We also welcome the report’s acknowledgement of the work done by CYF staff.”

“The report does, however, raise serious questions over the quality of management practice within the service. PSA is committed to helping restore New Zealanders’ confidence in the service but we do not want to see more reports and short-term decision-making.”

Richard Wagstaff said Child Youth and Family social workers carry out a difficult job helping children and young people who are not, in many cases, being otherwise cared for or protected, and need the support of New Zealanders. This was not made easy, however, by the constant negative criticism they receive which was usually a result of politicians playing political football.

“PSA, on behalf of our members in Child Youth and Family, hopes this package may at last be a chance to start getting things right.”
