Get real on roads: Bad law being made in Parliament

Petrol taxes and road user charges are being used for purposes other than roads.

This means roading is under-funded. The result is a poor roading system - not enough new roads in Auckland and narrow, dangerous roads in other parts of the country - bad for safety and bad for business.

The Land Transport Management Bill, which comes back to Parliament on Tuesday or Wednesday (14th or 15th October), will make it worse.

It will allow even more money to be extracted from motorists and spent on rail subsidies and other non-road areas. (Rail is a valid option and the Government/Greens can choose to subsidise it - but not at the expense of roads.)

The Land Transport Management Bill should be changed to ensure that road user money is spent only on roads.
