Government's Immigration Policy Works

Citing figures provided by the NZ Association for Migration and Investment that show a net immigration drop to 2,460 over August, down from a monthly average of 3,000, Libertarianz spokesman Stephen Berry says, "The populist immigration tightening has had the obvious effect: it is becoming increasingly difficult to get into the country. As a consequence one of our economic boosters, immigration, is diminishing."

Following the tightening of immigration regulations, the Government maintained a goal of 45,000 new immigrants each year; the current results show that the target will be missed by more than 13,000. Berry wonders, "Why does the Government even think that it has a right to crack down on ''low-quality' immigrants? If there weren't so many taxpayer-funded entitlements encouraging people here to be non-productive, immigration wouldn't be an issue! Even the prejudices of the Winston Peters mob would prove groundless, exposing the racism behind them."

Berry continues, "this government has a history of legislating their own personal prejudices as a higher priority than freedom and economic growth. A prejudice against employers has seen draconian employment legislation passed; a prejudice against private banking saw stolen funds used to create a state bank. Now racial and cultural prejudice will be used to lower our long-term living standards."

Berry finishes by presenting the Libertarianz plan for immigration -"Quite simply, we say that peaceful peoples should be able to cross borders freely!" Berry offers only one caveat to this approach, "As long as the welfare state exists, immigrants must forswear all claims on state welfare."

"Open immigration is a boon, not a drain," concludes Berry. "A country as distant as we are from world markets can only gain from it!"
