Press Release

16 September 2003

From:

Terenga Paraoa Marae
Whangarei

Approximately 400 people travelled to Whangarei last night and today for the hui called by the government about the foreshore and seabed.

The Kaumatua of Whangarei Terenga Paraoa marae had agreed that the Government would attend and be treated with respect according to tikanga. Marae Trustees Chairman Tom Parore says “We reached the conclusion today that it was in everyone’s best interests that the hui be cancelled.”

“Discussion amongst several Iwi prior to the scheduled start time indicated the level of anger against the Government was so high that it would have been impossible to proceed”, he concluded.
