PSA welcomes public services
changes
The strengthening of the Ministry of Women’s
Affairs and the creation of a new Ministry of Youth
Development announced today by the Government are positive
moves, PSA national secretary Richard Wagstaff said
today.
“The moves announced today are another reinforcement that the Government is intent on improving and increasing the capacity and capability of New Zealand’s public services. Our members have tolerated for too long working in an environment of stretched resources and insufficient funding. PSA welcomes the moves as another step towards dealing with the serious issues facing our state sector system.”
Richard Wagstaff said the PSA had been involved from the start in the Government’s review of the public management system. He said that the announcement today also indicated a move towards a more cohesive and integrated public service providing opportunities for organisations to be able to share information, resources, and functions.
“The new approach will mean much less opportunity for things to fall through the cracks. It should also lead to greater opportunities for public servants to develop within the public service to the benefit of themselves and their organisation and, of course, to all New Zealanders.”
