Industry training skills New Zealand
Steve Maharey the Minister of Education (Tertiary Education), Simon Carlaw from Business New Zealand and Carol Beaumont
from the New Zealand Council of Trade Unions launched the skill nz campaign to promote workplace learning today.
“The industry training route for developing skills will start to receive the promotion it needs”, said Darel Hall
Executive Director of the Industry Training Federation.
Research conducted by the Industry Training Federation and Business New Zealand shows that effective promotion can work.
42% of businesses were aware of Industry Training Organisations compared to 33% awareness of Modern Apprenticeships.
There are twenty times more people in industry training, so the comparatively high awareness of Modern Apprenticeships
is very likely due to its high promotion.
“Employers, employees, school leavers and the general public need to have a fair appreciation of what industry training
offers so they can make a fair assessment of what pathway is best for them: people need to know to be able to make a
real choice.
“As the Minister said, it’s not good enough for people to default to university study when they leave school because
they don’t know the options in front of them. The fact is that industry training can provide excellent tertiary
education and you earn while you learn – no student loan”.
