Confiscation of Maori Property – Foreshore and Seabed.

TKM REJECT the Government’s threat to extinguish Maori Customary Title to the foreshore and seabed. TKM encourages all Maori and their allies to take direct action against the Government. The Government has willfully threatened to overrule the Court of Appeal decision which held that Maori Customary Title to the foreshore and seabed may be determined by the Maori Land Court.

This threat by Helen Clark to overrule the COA by using Parliament to change the Law, can be described as nothing but racist, exercised by a majority against a people whose number less. The Prime Minister is essentially stating; “when Judges make laws in favor of Maori people, the Government will change the Law”

Helen Clark uses the excuse of fear generated from Pakeha constituents as the reason such law change is necessary. This response is xenophobic and indicates intolerance, fear and a racist attitude. TKM believe this discriminates against a group of people based on racial identity, motivated by fear, this is racism.

In Tuesday’s Herald, the front page stated the Government is quelling Pakeha fears regarding a Maori Claim to the seabed and foreshore.

TKM this type of dialogue builds fear among Maori and pakeha people. It makes no mention of the huge numbers of wealthy foreigners flocking into NZ buying up exclusive bays and coastal properties, and fencing off such properties denying access to the public. TKM are encouraging Maori people to use and develop their coastal properties and call upon their Pakeha allies to support them against property theft led and encouraged by the present Government.

If the Government continues this path, a formal complaint of racism will be laid with the Human Rights Office.
