Mothers Say: Label All GE Foods

Mothers Say: Label All GE Foods

“New Zealand mothers demand the right to know what GE foods they are feeding their children” Alannah Currie, Madge spokeswoman.

This Mothers Day (Sunday May 11) women and children will join in a Madge (Mothers Against Genetic Engineering in Food and the Environment) protest at a central Auckland supermarket demanding that ALL GE Foods are labeled.

Under the current labeling scheme, set up one year ago, exemptions undermine the consumers right to know what they are buying. Foods derived from GE Crops, such as canola and soy cooking oils, as well as meat, dairy and eggs from GE fed animals (Inghams Chickens) are currently not labeled but readily available on our supermarket shelves.

In March last year one of Britain’s’ most eminent and conservative body of scientists, the Royal Society, warned that until a lot more research is done, genetically engineered organisms should not be fed to pregnant women, babies, infants or the elderly. (Guardian UK 2.5.02)

The Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) intends to review its current labeling laws and Madge is insisting that all GE ingredients be compulsorily labeled under the consumers right to know.

“We are putting our children at risk every time we shop and we demand that the government reviews these lax labeling laws and tightens them as they have in Britain. Its every consumers right to know if the food they are buying comes from GE derived plants and animals,” says Miss Currie
