Auckland, Tuesday, April 29, 2003; 3.00pm: Three Greenpeace activists have been arrested after police cut them away from blockading the entry point of the Auckland International Airport Incinerator.
The action was taken to prevent trucks from entering the site with waste that would be incinerated. The burning of waste creates deadly dioxins. Despite being within the ‘legal limit’ of polluting, dioxins from the incinerator are continuing to poison the community and the environment.
“Dioxins are among the most poisonous substances known and there is no proven safe level of emissions”, said Greenpeace Toxics Campaigner Carmen Gravatt. “It is ridiculous that Auckland Airport continues to gamble with our health and the environment, when safe and economically viable alternatives exist.”
Currently Suzette Jackson, Steve Abel and Sarah Duthie are in the Manukau District Court.
Greenpeace is demanding the facility be replaced with a clean alternative and that the New Zealand Government ban incineration nationally.
