Press Release Friday, 21 March, 2003
With bombs now falling on the people of Iraq, Wellingtonians will be on the street Saturday, March 22 to say "Stop the War - U.S Out of Iraq". Gather at Civic Square, 11:00 am, and march through Parliament Grounds (12:00 noon) to the U.S. Embassy (12:30). The event is sponsored by Peace Action Wellington as part of a National Day of Action in Aotearoa / New Zealand.
As the American and British governments ignore world opinion and start an unprovoked invasion of Iraq, using "shock and awe" - an attitude of mass destruction, it is especially important for ordinary people to show that they count and will not continue to be ignored.
The future belongs to people who offer alternatives to a world continually at war, and take responsibility for what their governments do. In New Zealand, that means demanding the Te Mana, the Orion, and the other military personnel be taken out of the war immediately, and demanding the government must speak out sharply against the war. Those who are bombing the innocent civilians of Iraq are NOT "our friends"
It is a time for sadness, but not a time for silence. Be seen and be heard.
