Twelve NZ Defence Personnel Safe in Cyprus

The 12 New Zealand Defence Force personnel attached to the United Nations Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission (UNMOVIC) in Iraq are safe in Cyprus, the Chief of Defence Force, Air Marshal Bruce Ferguson, confirmed this morning.

He said the last two members of the medical and communications support staff were airlifted from Baghdad early this morning New Zealand time arriving in Cyprus shortly before (NZ) 6 a.m. today.

“We are very relieved and pleased that our people are now safe in Cyprus,” he said.

The NZDF personnel will remain attached to the United Nations and await further instructions.
