Employment Relations Authority rules in favour of Public Prisons Service
A decision by the Employment Relations Authority has ruled in favour of the Public Prisons Service allowing a change in
nightshift levels in Standalone units, says Phil McCarthy, General Manager, Public Prisons Service.
The Public Prisons Service have been standardising prison staffing arrangements since 1999.
“The change to nightshift levels in Standalone units is part of this process and is aimed at achieving national
consistency. Since 2000 there has been extensive consultation both nationally and locally on this matter and we are
pleased that the matter has been concluded.
“We were always confident of the outcome given the consultation process, the fact that we had addressed issues raised by
CANZ consultation and that the staffing levels have been operating successfully at a number of prisons for some time.”
Implementation of the policy will now commence at Christchurch Men’s, Rolleston and Auckland prisons.
