FIGHTING FOR THE RIGHT TO POLLUTE
Oil is the most destructive substance in the world. Not only is it at the heart of many international conflicts, including the impending war in Iraq, its direct environmental effects are devastating. When the oil tanker The Prestige sank near the Spanish coast last October, it began the worst environmental disaster Europe has ever seen. While it has slipped out of the headlines, four months on, the wrecked tanker is still pouring oil into the sea and continues to bring environmental and economic ruin to the Galacian coast.
WHY WE LOVE WAR
War does strange things to peoples' minds. While in peacetime there tolerance for a range of opinions and beliefs and the possibility of rational discussion, in war everything is reduced to black and white, enemies are demonised and stereotypes are enforced. Moreover, we seem to love it! Lawrence LeShan examines the psychology behind our attraction to war, and how it distorts our perception of reality.
GREEN HOME ITALIANA
We sit on it, eat off it and lie on it every day, but we very rarely think about where our furniture comes from or how it impacts the environment. Until now, furniture manufacture has lagged behind other industries in terms of sustainability and Œgreen¹ standards. But all this is about to change - and the place at the forefront of the green furniture revolution, as Peter McCaig discovered, is Tuscany.
RUMI NATIONS
Katya Langmuur ponders the rise and rise in the popularity of a thirteenth century poet from the other side of the world who is taking the modern West by storm.
