Feel 'at home' at new Govt House website
New Zealanders to feel 'at home' at new Government House
Website
Government House today launched its new website at http://www.gg.govt.nz.
The website features a photo tour of Government House, a complete history of all former Governors and Governors-General and a section on the New Zealand Honours system.
Governor-General Dame Silvia Cartwright said the site had a distinct New Zealand character. "We are maturing as a nation and we hope we have been able to reflect this in the design of the website. The site is modern and wears its New Zealand character on its sleeve, while also firmly acknowledging our historical past," Dame Silvia said.
The site features sections on the Treaty of Waitangi, Waitangi Day and Anzac Day. Dame Silvia said she wanted the site to make New Zealand visitors "feel at home", while also making overseas visitors feel welcome and giving them "a distinct New Zealand experience."
The site features a Media Centre containing the latest Press Releases from Government House, the Governor-General's speeches and free downloadable images.
Another special section is devoted to education. In the 'Kids' Stuff' section, aimed at Primary School children, the Governor-General's dog Thelma, a Boston Terrier, explains what a Governor-General is. The 'Education Resources' section, prepared specifically for secondary schools, contains a knowledge quiz for students.
Dame Silvia said she was particularly pleased with the interactive nature of the education section. "It is vital for our youngsters to gain a clear understanding of the workings of our constitutional monarchy and we hope that the resources available to teachers and students through the Government House website will help to promote this understanding."
Public Affairs Officer Stefan Wolf said the site had something to offer to all New Zealanders. "The photo tour of Government House gives all those who always wanted to have a look inside this wonderful building a chance to do so. The historical furnishings and amazing artworks inside the House are now accessible to everyone," Mr Wolf said.
He said the production team had risen to the challenge of realising a complex project brief. "We are aiming the site at all New Zealanders as well as overseas audiences, and this made the design particularly tricky. We are delighted with the final result."
Mr Wolf said the site featured a number of custom-made content management tools that allow Government House staff to keep the site fresh while keeping maintenance costs down.
The site was produced and edited in-house, with design and development contracted to Megan Hosking of Alto Limited and Daniel Bar?Even of Juicy Partnership. The photography of the interior of Government House was by Mark Coote - Photographer.
