Benefits of Union Membership

Benefits of Union Membership

“Those attacking the benefits achieved for PSA members through collective bargaining are slow to understand what union membership is all about,” said Paul Goulter, secretary of the Council of Trade Unions today.

“The job of unions is to negotiate employment agreements that are beneficial for their members.”

Paul Goulter said attacking benefits gained through collectively bargaining by the PSA for members showed a failure to understand collective bargaining.

“People join unions because they make a difference,” he said.

“For most union members, one of the main attractions of union membership is being part of collective bargaining, and naturally that means having access to the benefits which are achieved in bargaining and ratified by the membership.”

Paul Goulter said that the Employment Contracts Act was about promotion of individual contracts.

“One of the key objectives of the Employment Relations Act is to promote collective bargaining,” he said.

“Under the law collective agreements apply to union members.”
