SPARC Legislation Passed

SPARC Legislation Passed

Legislation entitled the Sport and Recreation New Zealand Bill was passed in the house today.

The Bill formalises the creation of SPARC (Sport and Recreation New Zealand).

John Wells, Chairman of SPARC said "it is excellent to have the legislation in place.

The existing legislation did allow us to set up SPARC and operate effectively but we have set some ambitious targets to achieve by 2006 and the new legislation will give us more flexibility in achieving our goals.

The new bill will also allow the further development of the Sports Disputes Tribunal that SPARC announced earlier this year.

SPARC is a merger of the Hillary Commission, Sports Foundation and sport policy arm of the Office of Tourism and Sport.

SPARC will lead the development of physical recreation and sport and provide greater co-ordination within the sector. It will also provide funding for physical recreation and sports programmes and undertake policy work and research on physical recreation and sport in New Zealand.
