Sky Workers Delighted at Union/Company Agreement on
Smoking Bans
The Service & Food Workers Union (SFWU) and Sky City have reached an historic agreement to work on initiatives to ban smoking in enclosed spaces in hospitality venues.
Sky City workers have been campaigning for some time to achieve a smoke free workplace and have gathered more than 3000 signatures on a petition calling for smoking to be banned at Casinos, along with other venues in the hospitality industry.
The agreement, reached in conjunction with the renewal of Sky City’s Collective Agreement with the union commits Sky City and the SFWU to working together on an agreed programme of initiatives to help bring about an industry-wide ban.
“This is an industry first,” said Darien Fenton, National Secretary of the SFWU, the union for Casino workers.
“It’s a great day for Sky City workers and we congratulate Sky City for taking the lead.” “No other hospitality employer has been brave enough to take this on, but we will continuing our campaign across the hospitality industry to win total protection against second-hand smoke.”
“This is a life and
death issue for workers. You don’t mess with workers’ lives
and there should not be a lower standard of protection for
Hospitality workers against second-hand smoke” said Ms
Fenton.
