Let's Get The Facts Straight Says AA
Those who rail against the construction of an eastern transport corridor have criticised the AA as being totally
pro-car, anti-public transport and even anti-environment. That's an easy mantra to chant, but is far detached from
reality.
In fact the AA represents the majority view of its members and of Aucklanders at large who overwhelmingly support
construction of an Auckland Motorway network including integrated public transport options.
This position is substantiated by a comprehensive survey commissioned by the AA and conducted by independent market
researchers Research Solutions Ltd. The findings, based on a general population survey of 801 people in Auckland region,
aged 18 years or older, showed overwhelming public support, from 83% of the population, for the completion of a
strategic transport network for the Auckland region and in an integrated manner which includes a range of private and
public transport options. The maximum statistical margin of error was plus or minus 3.5%.
90% supported completion the Eastern Corridor, when presented with options which included the integration of public and
private transport systems. Of a range of options put forward, 48% supported options which included rail, and 40% options
which included a dedicated bus lane - compared to just 9% supporting a motorway only option, and 4% a rail only option.
This view is supported by the weight of evidence within New Zealand and overseas which has shown that public transport
by itself will not address Auckland's transport crisis but, instead, a mix of both public transport and roading is
essential to achieve the outcome needed.
For the record, the AA supports an integrated transport solution for the Auckland region which includes construction of
both the eastern and western motorways and future proofing this transport network with an efficient, cost-effective,
user-friendly, low emission bus rapid transport system, supported by an integrated ferry network and a sensible
commitment to heavy rail.
