~ 5 to 7 October - Pine Gap Protest! desert camp - national convergence on Pine Gap - major days of action being planned now - workshops - creative actions - music - give the land back to the Arrernte people! Pine Gap is a military spy base for the United States, it is located at Alice Springs, Northern Territory, Australia. It has been there since the 1960s and has played a major role in many US military operations (including the Gulf War and the current 'War on Terror'). "It will be an integral part of the proposed US star wars system enabling the US to dominate and control space. Its very existence on Australian soil makes us complicit in the military strikes of America and makes us a nuclear target. We don't want it. Help us expose it and shut it down this October." Wipe Out Poverty Week - Christian World Service (CWS) has launched an exciting new youth initiative with the first ever Wipe Out Poverty Week; a fun filled week of water, washing, cleaning and shining - all to aid projects supported by CWS and get youth groups, schools and young New Zealanders involved in the fight against global poverty and injustice. Young people will be sponsored or collect donations for the cleaning they do; the only limit is kiwi kids imagination. ~ 9 to 21 September - 'Globalisation, Women Workers and the Struggle for Justice', national speaking tour by Emilia Dapulang, vice president of the KMU (Kilusang Mayo Uno, or May First Movement), the best known Filipino trade union confederation. Dapulang has been a leader in her own union, in the semi-conductor industry, since the 1980s and has risen through the KMU leadership since the mid-1990s.

~ TUES, 3 September - 'Constitutional Reform in the UK and the Future of the Appellate and Judicial Committees', a lecture by Richard Cornes (University of Essex) - the Labour government's constitutional reform programme has re-ignited debate about the functions and organisation of the UK's highest courts, the Appellate Committee of the House of Lords and the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council. The Human Rights Act and devolution of power to Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland (and possibly in time, England as well) hand significant new functions to the courts, while House of Lords reform raises the very question of the Law Lords' membership of the second chamber. ~ TUES, 3 September - 'The Responsibility to Protect', a round table discussion on the Report of the International Commission on Intervention and State Sovereignty led by the Canadian High Commissioner, H.E. Mr John Donaghy with contributions from David Shearer, Colin Keating, Andrew Ladley and NZDF personnel. The Report was the initiative of the Government of Canada which established the Commission in September 2000 to examine the issue of “the right of humanitarian intervention” - the question of when, if ever, it is appropriate for states to take coercive – and in particular military – action against another state for the purpose of protecting people at risk in that other state; presentations will examine the external military intervention for human protection purposes which have been controversial both when it has happened – as in Somalia, Bosnia and Kosovo – and when it has failed to happen - as in Rwanda. ~ WEDS, 18 September - 'Mexico’s New Foreign Policy and Disarmament', His Excellency Ambassador Miguel Marin-Bosch (Under-Secretary for Africa, Asia-Pacific, Europe and the UN System, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mexico) speaks at the meeting of the NZIIA Wellington branch. Miguel Marin-Bosch is a distinguished career diplomat, a member of the UN Secretary-General’s Advisory Board on Disarmament Matters, and he currently chairs a group of government experts appointed by the Secretary-General to draft a report on disarmament and non-proliferation education; in November 1996 he visited New Zealand and delivered the first Erich Geiringer oration: 'Getting rid of nukes'.
