Vote for the Environment Campaign : Elections 2002

Organised every election year by a coalition comprising Environment and Conservation Organisations of New Zealand (ECO), Greenpeace NZ, Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society and Federated Mountain Clubs.

The Vote for the Environment coalition has prepared a Charter that outlines their preferred policy portfolio on environmental issues. This Charter is used to prepare a Questionaire, both of which are sent to political parties to gauge their response to around 50 questions. These responses are then made public before the election so that voters can see where each party stands on a number of environmental issues.

Notice of Upcoming Events

1. Friday, June 28th Vote for the Environment Introduction (2:30 - 3 pm) and Workshops (3.30-5pm) (part of the ECO annual conference) Massey University - Wellington Campus, Level C, Block 7 (signposted from Gate A, Wallace St) Media welcome.

2. Friday June 28th, 7:30pm Vote for the Environment Public Meeting - Political Forum. (part of the ECO annual conference) Massey University - Wellington Campus, Room LT200, Block 6 (signposted from Gate A, Wallace St)

Representatives of the major political parties will be speaking and answering questions on their party’s environmental issues. Speakers include: Nick Smith - National John Wright - Progressive Coalition Ruth Dyson - Labour Jeanette Fitzsimons - Greens (who will be launching the Greens’ Environmental Policy Wayne Chapman - United Future NZ Anna Sutherland - Alliance

3. Thursday, July 4th, 10:30am Vote for the Environment Charter Launch Turnbull House, Bowen St, Wellington. Downstairs meeting room.

Several speakers from members of the coalition will introduce aspects of the charter.

ECO was founded in 1971 and is New Zealand’s environmental network. It represents 70 member groups. Greenpeace has the largest membership of any environmental group in New Zealand. Forest and Bird and Federated Mountain Clubs both have large and broad-ranging memberships.

This is the fifth Vote for the Environment Campaign since its inception in 1990.
