Election 2002 - there's only one issue that matters
What matters at the forthcoming election is straightforward says Business NZ - How can New Zealanders best ensure first world health, education, superannuation and environmental outcomes for themselves, their children and grandchildren?
Growing the economy faster, better and more sustainably is a necessity, not an option, said Business NZ Chief Executive Simon Carlaw.
"Doing a bit here or there, or something soon, won't grow the economic cake enough to meet New Zealanders' expectations," Mr Carlaw said. "Already the OECD ranks New Zealand with low middle income countries like Cyprus or Slovenia, not with Australia, the UK or the USA, the countries we like to compare ourselves with.
"New Zealanders need to think hard about what sort of country we might be in 2010 or 2050. Luck or good fortune won't be enough; nor are there any magical silver bullets. New Zealand needs to get serious about growth now. Only growth will create the jobs and pay the bills.
"This is the key issue Kiwis need to consider over the next five weeks."
