Allocation Of Election Broadcasting Funds

The Electoral Commission today announced its allocations of election broadcasting time and funds to political parties for next month’s general election.

In making the announcement the Commission noted that the $2.081 million (including GST) provided for allocation had not changed since the 1990 election.

Parties are not permitted to spend their own funds in buying broadcasting time

The two biggest parties, the New Zealand Labour Party and the New Zealand National Party, will equally share more than half of the money to be allocated.

In total,14 parties will receive an allocation of money for broadcasting election programmes on radio and television. Some also receive free time for opening and closing addresses on TVNZ and Radio New Zealand.

Parties are allowed to broadcast their election programmes between Writ Day (25 June) and midnight on 26 July (the day before Election Day).

The individual allocations are as follows:

Friday 28 June (TVNZ: between 7.30pm and 8.30pm; RNZ: between 8.05pm and 9pm)

The order of the closing addresses will be as follows:

TVNZ will broadcast non-political advertising between blocks of opening addresses and between blocks of closing addresses.
