"What a damned nerve this government has, " says an angry Libertarianz spokesman about Marian Hobbs' introduction of
so-called voluntary music quotas for radio. Libertarianz spokesman for broadcasting deregulation Larry Timberlake says:
"To call these quotas 'voluntary' is Orwellian. There's nothing 'voluntary' about a measure backed by the big stick of
government. It's official: New Zealand music quota's are now mandatory. The Cultural Revolution continues!"
"This is yet another case of the government sticking it's destructive beak into private business - in which it has no
business," he says. "Radio station owners - predominantly foreign - are going to be forced to play music that their
audiences don't want to hear, and they have chosen not to programme. It's a clear violaton of their property rights, and
their freedom of speech."
Timberlake says that the only interests being served by this dictatorial imposition are muso's whose work can't make it
on it's own merits.. "If they want air time, let them earn it!"
Libertarianz are emphatically opposed to government regulation of private enterprise and would quash quotas immediately.
"If politicians and APRA director Mike Chunn are so passionate about New Zealand music why haven't they bought their own
station, with their own money and devoted it totally to New Zealand music? We all know why," concludes Timberlake.
