The “Oscars” for the worst Transnational Corporations in New Zealand

What do Tranz Rail; Monsanto; Carter Holt Harvey; Mobil; United Water and British American Tobacco (BAT) have in common? Apart from being TransNational Corporations (TNC) with significant interests in New Zealand, these companies have all been nominated by the public for the Roger Award.

Every year the public is invited to nominate the TNC which is doing most damage to New Zealand economy and ways of life for the Roger Award.

The two Christchurch-based groups which organise the annual Roger Award say that TNCs are the real “government” of New Zealand

The criteria for judging are by assessing the transnational that has the most negative impact in New Zealand in each or all of the following fields: unemployment, monopoly, profiteering, abuse of workers/conditions, political interference/running an ideological crusade, environmental damage, cultural imperialism, impact on tangata whenua, impact on women, health and safety of workers and the public.

For the first time the award will be announced in Auckland at an open-air multi-media event with live music, street theatre and video in Freyberg Square, High Street, central Auckland on Friday 12 April at 7.30pm. Speakers at the event will be Murray Horton of CAFCA and Mairie Leadbetter.

George Baxter one of the Auckland organizers says: “The Roger Award is part of our challenge to the “Centre-Left” Government – what are our elected representatives doing to control and roll back the power of the real, unelected government of New Zealand, the transnational corporations?”
