Richard Prebble told his party's conference yesterday that "ACT’s promise to business is a bonfire of regulations, starting with the Resource Management Act." "If only!" responds the Libertarianz spokesman for environmental deregulation Peter Cresswell, who suggests Prebble's RMA promise is about as believable as his other promise to have twenty MPs in the next parliament. "He promises businessmen a bonfire, yet his party's policy promises them only an 'overhaul' of the RMA," points out Cresswell, who accuses Prebble of being "just another politician with a forked tongue."

Cresswell and his Libertarianz party have consistently advocated the scrapping of the Resource Management Act in favour of common law, saying for over six years now that the RMA is "an eco-fascist disaster empowering the worst violations of property rights since the war" - it has stolen property owners' land from them, and in the name of freedom it should be killed off "with a stake driven through its heart."

Scrapping the RMA has never been ACT's policy however, points out Cresswell, who notes that ACT's deputy leader is amongst those who wrote the damned thing, and that ACT supporters make thousands of dollars in consultants' fees from the damned thing. ACT's policy document says instead that " the Resource Management Act (RMA) has some sound aims!" and promises an "overhaul" rather than a conflagration.

"ACT claim to be a party that values freedom and respects property rights," sighs Cresswell. "I look forward to the day when their policy matches their rhetoric."
