Parasites at the Petrol Pump
"Eighteen months ago Deputy PM Neanderton called oil companies "parasites" four raising petrol prices by four cents. Today Deputy PM Neanderton has announced a four-cent increase in petrol tax. Pot! Kettle! Black!" says Libertarianz Leader and Coromandel Candidate Peter Cresswell today.
"This an attack on motorists and totally unnecessary for funding roading improvements in Auckland," says Cresswell, "and is just a precursor of the greenies' carbon tax to come."
Cresswell points out that over 18c a litre in petrol tax is already robbed from motorists to fund Concert FM, MPs lunches, the DPB, Kiwibank and Tukuroarangi Morgan's new cartoon series on 'Hawaiiki'. Extra money for Transfund to immediately fund new motorways should come from that looting, and the balance of the tax abolished."
Petrol tax is an acceptable form of user pays - "for now," stresses Cresswell - but only if ALL of the money collected is used to pay for roads, and only until roads are privatised, technology allows direct charging of vehicles, and the Resource Management Act abolished to allow new roads to be built without delay. "Until then driving should not be an excuse for highway robbery," he says.
"What adds insult to injury is that a large proportion of the increase is for motorists to subsidise trains and buses because the Greens love trains and buses - no matter how few people use them!
"Just wait," says Cresswell,"'til their carbon tax kicks in!"
It's enough to make you vote Libertarianz!
