Mobil Backs Government Decision To Regulate Sulphur Levels In Diesel

Mobil Oil New Zealand is supporting the Government's decision to regulate lower sulphur levels in New Zealand diesel.

The decision follows the completion of two trials of lower sulphur diesel carried out by the New Zealand Refining Company to see whether it was possible to reduce sulphur in diesel and what issues this might create.

"Mobil supports the Government's decision and thanks Commerce Minister Paul Swain for his active involvement in the process," said Alan Heng, Mobil Oil New Zealand Country Manager. "Mobil asked the Government to lead this issue and develop a process of informed discussion with industry. The trials provided the platform for an informed debate.

"Mobil has always supported lowering sulphur for all New Zealand," said Mr Heng. "Now the Government, which is responsible for regulating fuel specifications, is acting to lower sulphur in Auckland after considering all the issues, which is what Mobil asked for."

Mr Heng added: "It's important that fuel changes are combined with better roads, improved traffic management, the introduction of new vehicle technology and more stringent vehicle emission standards to maximise environmental benefits."
