Public Meetings Part Of Fight Against Casualisation

The New Zealand Waterfront Workers' Union is holding public meetings in southern ports to build community support for their campaign against casualisation.

The WWU will be hosting a meeting in Port Chalmers on Wednesday 28 November at 7pm. The venue is the old OHB Hall in Beach Street (next door to the Port Otago building.)

A second meeting in Bluff will be held on Wednesday 5 December at 7pm. The venue is the Bluff Fire Station Hall.

All waterfront workers, local people, trade unions, community and political groups are invited to the open meeting. One of the main goals of the meeting is to build links between trade unions and local communities in order to defend secure employment.

"Many waterfront workers have experienced the legacy of insecure incomes, irregular work, threats to health and safety and family stress which go with casualisation. The aim is that our campaign unites workers across other industries as well as our own," said Campaign Organiser Victor Billot.

Following disruption to local communities caused by the use of out of town, casual labour stevedores in South Island ports earlier in the year, the WWU has continued its campaign to defend the rights of workers to secure employment. The public meetings are part of this wider campaign.
