November 9: Christchurch Action On The WTO
FRIDAY NOVEMBER 9th
is the first day of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) Summit, in Qatar (Arabia). It is the first such Summit since the illfated 1999 one in Seattle. Under the leadership of its Director-General, New Zealand's very own Mike Moore, it hopes to kick off a new Millennium Round of trade and investment negotiations. Which basically means more power and wealth for transnational corporations and local Big Business, at the expense of ordinary people everywhere.
Internationally, action has been organised to coincide with this meeting. New Zealand is part of that action.
In Christchurch a coalition of various groups has organised a rally/march/tour, entitled: "SAY NO TO THE WTO: MARCH AGAINST CORPORATE GLOBALISATION".
It will start with a RALLY at 12 NOON, at the CORNER OF HIGH AND CASHEL STREETS (CITY MALL)
Then there will be a TOUR OF CAPITALIST GREED.
FOUR representative companies have been chosen to be the focus of this Tour, to illustrate the takeover of New Zealand by transnationals and local Big Business.
* At 12.35, we will be at the NIKE Shop, in City Mall (between Colombo St and Oxford Terrace).
* 1 p.m. at TELECOM (Hereford Street end of the Telecom Arcade).
* 1.20 at STARBUCKS (old Post Office building, Cathedral Square).
* 1.40, back at our starting point, where the focus will be on WESTPACTRUST (head office, corner of Cashel and High Sts).
We invite the public to join us. There will be banners, leaflets, placards, music, speakers, food, coffee, something for everyone.
For information, phone 3654068. Ring this number if you want to be involved or can help publicise it.
