~ 19 to 25 September - Ciaron O’Reilly national speaking tour - Ciaron has been involved in non-violent direct action for more than 20 years. His involvement in East Timor solidarity groups is documented in his new book ‘Remembering Forgetting: a journey of non-violent resistance to the war in East Timor’, recently published by Otford Press in Australia. He is active in the Swords Into Plowshares movement; and will talk about his involvement in the disarming of a B52 bomber during the Gulf war, disabling equipment used for uranium mining on Aboriginal land at Jabiluka in Australia's Northern Territory, and also outline the movements against global capital and the attempts to derail them. ~ MON, 24 September - ‘The New Rulers of the World’, NZ premiere of the documentary investigating globalisation by John Pilger, who really rules the world now? Is it governments or a handful of huge companies? The Ford Motor Company alone is bigger than the economy of South Africa. Hugely rich men, like Bill Gates, have a greater wealth than all of Africa. This film looks at the new rulers of the world - the multinationals and the governments and institutions that back them - the IMF and the World Bank, filmed in Indonesia and Washington, asking challenging questions seldom raised in the mainstream media.
